Pediatric reconstructive surgery is a type of specialized surgery used to fix a condition or injury in children caused by a birth defect, developmental abnormalities, injury, illness, tumor, or accident. The surgeons at the Plastic Surgery Group have extensive training and experience both in Canada and internationally with reconstructive plastic surgery for children and the surgeons are qualified to perform a complete range of treatments. Depending on your child’s condition, your plastic surgeon may work together with other health professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Pediatric Surgical Conditions
The most common pediatric conditions requiring reconstructive surgery include:
- Appearance-related conditions such as birthmarks and scars, congenital nevi “moles,” and various “lumps and bumps”
- Ear deformities – prominent ears, microtia, asymmetric, or abnormally-shaped ears
- Vascular (blood vessel) anomalies of the face and body – hemiangiomas, vascular malformations
- Burns
- Injuries from trauma and accidents – including hand injuries, and facial injuries, fractures/lacerations, wound management, etc.
- Cleft lip and/or cleft palate – congenital abnormalities of the lip, top of the mouth, upper gum, and nose; or velopharyngeal dysfunction – a condition that causes complications with speech, swallowing, breathing (please note that we do not treat cleft lips or palates in Surrey. These are best done at a tertiary care centre.
- Congenital hand disorders, such as extra fingers or joined fingers
- Breast and chest deformities – asymmetrical breast/chest, macromastia, gynecomastia
- Brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries
- Facial motion disorders – disorders that result in absent, weakened, or abnormal facial motion in children
- Craniofacial deformities – congenital and acquired anomalies of the skull and face, cleft and craniofacial orthodontic issues
