Breast Asymmetry: Causes & Treatments
Breast asymmetry is common, occurring when the breasts differ from each other in size, form, volume, or position. The majority of women experience some type of asymmetry with their breasts.
A woman’s breasts can change throughout her life, and most causes of breast asymmetry are normal. However, breast asymmetry due to differences in density can be a sign of cancer. Women should have mammograms regularly and consult with their doctors if they notice any sudden changes in breast symmetry.
That said, breast asymmetry is most often nothing to worry about, and there are several cosmetic surgical procedures that can treat breast asymmetry.
Below, the team at The Plastic Surgery Group discusses the causes of breast asymmetry and its treatments.
Causes of Breast Asymmetry
Some of the most common causes of breast asymmetry include the following:
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Menopause
- Changes in hormones, such as during the menstrual cycle or due to hormonal contraceptives
- Injury
- Weight loss or gain
- Poor posture
- Uneven ribcage formation
Certain medical conditions may also result in breast asymmetry:
- Poland Syndrome
- Amastia
- Tubular breasts
Treatments for Breast Asymmetry
Treatment for breast asymmetry varies depending on how the breasts differ, the breasts’ size and shape, and the patient’s goals.
Here are three treatment options:
Breast Augmentation
A breast augmentation can be performed to increase the size of the smaller breast. Either a breast implant can be inserted into the smaller breast or implants can be inserted into both breasts, with one implant being larger than the other to correct the sizing imbalance.
Breast Reduction
A breast reduction can be performed to decrease the size of the larger breast. During the procedure, loose skin is removed from the larger breast and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned. In some cases, this procedure is performed on both breasts by removing more tissue from the larger breast to create symmetrical results.
Breast Lift
Sometimes, one breast sags significantly more than the other and a breast lift may be the best option. During the breast lift, the excess, sagging skin is removed from the breast to shape and contour it in a way that matches the other breast.
